Applies to: Page orientation changes in editable PDF copies; signatures can be invalidated by modification.
Use Organize Pages or a page-rotation command, select the affected thumbnails, rotate them 90 degrees, and save a new PDF. Close and reopen the file to confirm the orientation was written to the document rather than changed only in the viewer.
View rotation and page rotation differ
Many PDF readers can rotate the current view for convenience. That setting may disappear when the file is reopened or may not affect another recipient. Permanent rotation changes the page orientation stored in the PDF.
If only some pages were scanned sideways, select those thumbnails rather than rotating the entire document. Mixed portrait and landscape documents may be intentional.
Rotate pages in a controlled copy
Keep the original unchanged, especially for signed, filed, or archived records. Use thumbnail view to see the direction of every page before saving.
- Save a copy of the PDF.
- Open the page organization or thumbnail tool.
- Select only incorrectly oriented pages.
- Rotate clockwise or counterclockwise in 90-degree steps.
- Save under a new name.
- Close and reopen the result in a second reader.
Check content after rotation
Page rotation normally preserves text and image quality, but crop boxes, comments, form fields, links, and page labels still deserve a quick check. Print Preview can reveal an unexpected paper orientation or scaling choice.
If the visible content is itself crooked rather than exactly sideways, rotation is not enough. Use deskew or rescan the page so text lines become level.
Respect signatures and records controls
Changing page orientation modifies the PDF and can invalidate a digital signature. Preserve the signed original and ask the responsible party for an authorized corrected copy when signature validity matters.
For official records, document why the access copy was rotated and retain the unmodified source when policy requires it.
Use a second viewer to distinguish a saved rotation
Rotate only one intentionally sideways page in a copy, save it, close the editor and open the output in another reader. If it is sideways again, you may have changed only the viewing angle or reopened the original by mistake. Confirm the full file path and saved filename.
A landscape page with upright content is not necessarily an error. Keep its orientation if that is how a wide table is intended to read. For a slightly tilted scan, use deskew rather than a 90-degree page rotation.
