THE SHORT ANSWER

Work from a copy, use Extract when you need selected pages and Split when you need several files by page count, size, or bookmarks. Leave “delete after extracting” off until the new PDFs are verified, then reopen every result and compare page counts.

Extract and split are different operations

Extracting creates a new PDF from specific selected pages. Splitting divides a document into multiple files according to a rule such as a fixed page count, maximum file size, or top-level bookmarks.

Neither operation should replace the original automatically. Keep the source unchanged so you can recover from missing pages, wrong ranges, or lost document structure.

Plan page ranges before editing

PDF page numbers shown by the viewer may differ from printed numbers inside the document, especially when front matter uses Roman numerals. Use thumbnails and visible headings to confirm each boundary.

  1. Duplicate the source PDF.
  2. Write down the desired file names and page ranges.
  3. Select pages using thumbnails or choose a split rule.
  4. Keep the source pages in place during the first attempt.
  5. Save outputs into a new folder.
  6. Reopen each output and verify its first and last page.

Check more than the visible pages

Bookmarks, links, form fields, comments, attachments, accessibility tags, and metadata can behave differently after pages are separated. A link to a removed page may no longer work, and a form spread across files may lose its intended context.

Digitally signed PDFs can become invalid when altered. Preserve the signed original and follow the responsible organization’s procedure before extracting or splitting signed material.

Protect confidential output files

A newly created PDF may not inherit every security setting from its source. Review passwords, permissions, metadata, and the destination folder before sharing it.

For confidential documents, prefer a trusted offline application or an organization-approved service. Uploading a PDF to a public web tool exposes it to that provider’s storage and deletion practices.

Write both the visible label and the PDF position

Suppose a document has a cover and two introductory pages before printed page 1. Printed pages 1–5 occupy PDF positions 4–8. Confirm the thumbnails instead of typing 1–5 automatically. Check both the first and last extracted page after saving.

Keep the source until every output is verified. When splitting by bookmarks, inspect the bookmark hierarchy: a chapter heading and a nested subsection can produce very different groups. Links to pages left in another file may need explicit repair.
